In 2010, I was fortunate to see The Birth of
Venus at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence,
Italy. Painted by Sandro Botticelli in 1486, it was still
drawing crowds after more than 500 years. I could see why.
This large painting has a presence that certainly justifies
its iconic status. It is not possible to capture the
beauty of the original in any way, but I tried to do the best
thread reproduction I could. Stitch by stitch digitizing
allows the finished product to look like a drawing in thread
and keeps the stitch count comparatively low for such a large
